NEW YORK, NY/MEXICO CITY, MEXICO (April 21, 2009) – Barclays Capital, the investment banking business of Barclays Bank PLC, today announced the appointment of Gabriel Barbará as Head of Equities for Mexico, based in Mexico City. In this new role, Mr. Barbará will be responsible for establishing and expanding the firm's local Equities business. He will report jointly to José Antonio González, Head of Barclays Capital in Mexico, and Bill Rutledge, Head of Equities Distribution for Latin America.

Commenting on the appointment, Mr. González and Mr. Rutledge said, “Gabriel’s appointment better positions us to serve our clients. His extensive experience with both domestic and international institutional investors and pension funds will be invaluable as Barclays Capital develops its presence in the Mexican equities markets. He is highly regarded for his market intelligence, strategic execution and strong client relationships.”

The appointment of Mr. Barbará underscores Barclays Capital’s commitment to Mexico and the strategic expansion of the firm’s Equities business throughout Latin America and around the world. As a part of the Barclays Capital franchise in the Americas, Grupo Financiero Barclays México S.A. de C.V. provides financial services to corporate, government and institutional clients in Mexico and recently established Impulsora y Promotora BGI México, S.A. de C.V. to provide asset management services on behalf of Barclays Global Investors.

Prior to joining Barclays Capital, Mr. Barbará spent 14 years at Merrill Lynch México, most recently as a Director in Equities Sales-Trading; from 1995 to 2002, he was a Director in Equities Trading. Prior to joining Merrill Lynch México, Mr. Barbará worked for a number of financial services companies in Mexico in roles across equities sales and trading covering both regional and international stocks.
