The Americas, and particularly the US markets, are a critical area of increased focus for Barclays Capital. The region continues to make significant contributions to the firm's record results. The number of employees in the Americas has doubled in recent years to more than 4,000. Barclays Capital has consistently been a top issuer of US corporate investment grade debt in recent years, and has a successful and rapidly-growing leveraged finance business.

With offices in Toronto and Calgary, the firm has a growing presence in Canada. In November 2007, the firm completed a significant investment in Enhance Energy Inc ("Enhance"), a Calgary-based private company specializing in CO2 enhanced oil recovery and sequestration.

In Latin America, Barclays Capital has an excellent track record of significant and innovative USD and Euro transactions. The region plays a growing role for the firm thanks to the range of emerging market opportunities, particularly in Mexico, Brazil and Argentina. In 2007, Barclays Capital was a joint dealer manager on the United Mexican States US$8.8 billion exchange and tender offer.

Barclays Capital's achievements in the Americas are increasingly recognised. The firm was named US MTN Issuer of the Year by MTN-i in January 2008.
